Age, genetics, pregnancy and/or significant weight change can all cause you to develop excess tissue around your abdominal area.

But when eating a healthy diet, going to the gym, doing abdominal exercises and controlling your weight don’t help you achieve that flat stomach, a tummy tuck may help you reach your goal.

What is a tummy tuck?

An abdominoplasty, commonly known as a “tummy tuck,” is a popular cosmetic surgery procedure that removes extra skin and fat to improve the appearance of your abdomen.

Weakened muscles of the abdominal wall are tightened during the procedure to make your abdomen look firmer and smoother. The results are often immediate and can dramatically improve appearance. Many women undergo this procedure either alone or as part of a “Mommy Makeover” to regain their pre-pregnancy shape.

There are some things a tummy tuck can’t do — like get rid of stretch marks. However, it’s possible that stretch marks may be improved if they’re located where the extra skin will be removed during a tummy tuck.

What is a mini-tummy tuck?

A mini-tummy tuck is less extensive than a full tummy tuck. This cosmetic surgery improves the shape of the area below the belly button by removing excess tissue. Since the amount of tissue removed is less, recovery can be quicker. A mini-tummy tuck does not reposition the navel or remove extra skin in your upper abdominal area.

Tummy tuck and mini-tummy tuck results are usually long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight. If you’re planning to lose a lot of weight or get pregnant, you might consider postponing your procedure.

It’s important to note that these procedures are not a substitute for weight loss or an exercise program. Talk to our plastic surgeons to see if a tummy tuck or mini-tummy tuck is right for you.
