Clovis Community Medical Center has been recognized by  The Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center.

A Primary Stroke Center treats most cases of ischemic stroke (a type of stroke where there’s blood vessel blockage) and provides access to a skilled team of neurosurgery experts within two hours of arrival. Clovis Community is one of six Primary Stroke Centers in the Central Valley, and one of just three in the Fresno area.

Community Health System cares for all types of strokes

Clovis Community’s Primary Stroke Center recognition rounds out Community Health System’s neurosciences program, which also includes a Comprehensive Stroke Center program at Community Regional Medical Center and outpatient stroke services at Community Neurosciences Institute

“Achieving primary stroke center status at Clovis Community Medical Center will elevate stroke care to the next level, showcasing the dedication and teamwork of the entire staff,” said Dr. Mellekate Vishwas of Community Neurosciences Institute. “Early identification of stroke symptoms is crucial, as prompt intervention can greatly improve outcomes and quality of life for stroke patients.”

“As a part of the Community Neurosciences Institute, we are at the frontlines of treating patients who present with stroke symptoms,” said Dr. Noorie Pednekar.

“We recognize the impact stroke can have on a patient’s quality of life and it remains a leading cause of disability and death. To be awarded this designation is not only a testament to the tremendous work undertaken at all levels, but also reinforces our dedication to provide excellent stroke care to our patients here in the central valley with the goal of achieving long term success in improving their outcomes.”

Stroke is a leading cause of death in the U.S.

Each year, the National Institutes of Health reports that there are nearly 800,000 Americans who experience a new or recurrent stroke — the nation’s fifth leading cause of death. That’s an average of one stroke every 45 seconds, and one stroke-related death every 3.1 minutes.

If you think you or someone you know is having a stroke, call 9-1-1 immediately.
