Community Health System’s flagship hospital in Downtown Fresno began as the Burnett Sanitarium in 1897. A steady stream of major investments over the last 125 years has grown Community Regional Medical Center into one of the most vital assets in the Central Valley — and we aren’t done.

As the Valley’s largest and most vibrant hospital, Community Regional Medical Center serves as the medical safety net — meaning the highest level of care is provided to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. Community Regional plays an indispensable role in delivering on our mission: to better the lives of all those we serve. The hospital is the centerpiece of a 58-acre medical center campus in the heart of Downtown Fresno and serves 1.7 million people in our five-county primary service area.

A significant amount of our system’s resources are devoted to maintaining Community Regional’s indispensable role in providing comprehensive burn care, Level I trauma care, neurosciences and other advanced services not found anywhere else in our region.

Renovations are currently underway on a 200-bed skilled nursing facility (formerly Golden Living Center) on the downtown campus to help relieve the shortage of skilled nursing beds in the region.

In order to provide even greater access to neuroscience care, so patients don't have to travel outside the Valley, the planning stages have begun to build the Bob Smittcamp Family Neuroscience Institute at Community Regional.

Caring for the Central Valley — past, present and future

From our modest beginnings as the Burnett Sanitarium, Community has grown into one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery systems in the state. We’re proud of what Community Regional has become, and we plan to keep bettering the lives of many generations to come.
