In August 2022, Forbes released its list of “America’s Best Employers by State,”  and Community Health System was ranked number 30 in California out of 262 hospitals and health systems. This is the third time Community has made Forbes’ list of best employers in California.

Forbes annual report uses employer data and anonymous surveys to rank employers. The list is divided into 51 rankings covering each state and Washington, DC. It was compiled by surveying 70,000 Americans who are employed by businesses with 500 or more employees, Forbes said in a press release.

Going beyond base compensation and benefits

While surveying, Forbes takes a variety of different areas into consideration. This includes fair pay, employee safety, safe working conditions, culture of inclusivity, remote work benefits and diversity and equity initiatives.

“We’re working to build resilience through the employee benefits we offer, both the traditional benefits expected of employers and those that stretch outside the box,” said Carla Milton, senior vice president of Human Resources. “When I came on board in 2007, I’m not sure I would have predicted that over a decade later we would offer our team free massages, virtual therapy at their fingertips or dedicated counselors who roam to units and facilitate supportive conversations.”

Outside base compensation and benefits, Community has also worked to expand additional resources so employees are taken care of while at work and when off the clock. A recent addition, LifeWorks, provides employees with well-being tools including mental health resources, financial planning resources, a personal physical fitness coach and more. Employees also have access to a gym on the Community Regional Medical Center campus with free personal fitness coaching.

“It’s just the right thing to do: To make sure each employee’s life off the job enables them to be their best on the job. It also addresses changes in what job-seekers expect and enables Community, the largest private employer in the Central Valley, to be the employer of first choice that we strive to be,” Milton said.
