In light of the recent storms, our Emergency Preparedness Manger Aaron Dwoskin suggests this is a perfect time to look at your family’s own preparation efforts to deal with emergencies at home and in your own neighborhood.

Take these three easy steps to get ready for any event this winter season:

Be Informed – Listen  to local news and understand impacts of weather in areas you live and travel. Sign up for weather alerts through the National Weather Service or an app on your phone.

Plan Ahead – Make a plan today! Every one in the family should know how to connect during an emergency and where to reconnect, if separated. Plan for the next power outage, and assemble a kit at home for essential items like medications, copies of your insurance information, family member contact information, emergency water, flashlights, pet food, a few non-powered card or board games, and some cash too.

Take Action – When alerts and warnings are given for winter weather, be smart, listen to guidance from local officials. Remember to:
  • Stay off roads, if you must drive- slow down!
  • Dress warmly, prepare for power outages, use safe heating sources, check on neighbors, and continue to monitor local media for information.
  • Don't walk, swim, or drive through flood waters- they can be deadly. Just six inches of water can knock you down and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
