Radiation treatment is one of the most proven ways of beating prostate cancer, but it can also have some downsides. Proctitis is a side effect that’s as uncomfortable as it sounds. In simple terms, it’s an irritation of the rectum caused by radiation exposure. It can lead to diarrhea, bloody stool, leakage, and other problems.

Better than cancer? Yes. But still a problem nobody wants.

To help reduce and even eliminate these problems, doctors at Community Cancer Institute are using a technique called SpaceOAR. It’s a simple procedure that takes only a few minutes before radiation treatments begin.

With SpaceOAR, doctors inject two liquids between the prostate and the rectum. When combined, these two liquids quickly form a gel and create a cushion between the prostate and rectum. The gel, made of biodegradable material, protects the rectum from heavy doses of radiation. It stays in the patient’s body for about 3 months before being absorbed.
