California Cancer Center and Community Medical Centers’ cancer program were given the teaching level of accreditation and awarded The American College of Surgeons (ACOS) Accreditation with commendation as a teaching hospital for the third consecutive time. 
 

This accreditation makes California Cancer Center the highest ACOS designated program in the San Joaquin Valley.
 

“What this achievement means to our patients is that they will be evaluated and treated at the premier cancer center in the region,” said Dr. Brent Kane, medical director of radiation oncology at the California Cancer Center and the Marjorie E. Radin Breast Care Center. “They will have access to cancer treatments and research unavailable at other cancer programs in the region.”
 

The California Cancer Center and Community cancer program were awarded the three-year accreditation with commendation level of compliance by meeting one or more standards representing the full scope of the cancer program through an on-site evaluation by experienced health care professionals.
 

The Commission on Cancer (CoC) standards show that Community Medical Centers’ cancer program provides patients:

• Comprehensive care, including a complete range of state-of-the-art services and equipment.

• A team approach to coordinate the best available treatment options.

• Information about ongoing cancer clinical trials and new treatment options.

• Access to prevention and early detection programs, career education and support services.

• A cancer registry that offers lifelong patient follow-up.

• Ongoing monitoring and improvements in cancer care.

• Quality care, close to home.

Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and undergo a rigorous performance evaluation and review. 
 

According to the CoC, it is estimated that accredited programs annually diagnose and treat 80% of all new cancer cases. This statistic emphasizes the level of commitment to resources that commission-accredited programs have made to the care of patients with cancer.
