These 5 tips from Rebecca Young – a California middle school “20 year veteran” teacher with Common Sense Media – explains how parents can help limit kids’ screen time:
- Know when your kids are online – Monitor and watch for signs your child is using a device when he or she shouldn’t be: like after bedtime, at school or early morning when they should be getting ready. Some parents lock phones away at bedtime and allow them back after breakfast the next day.
- Internet controls – Check your device’s screen time settings that include downtime, app limits, content and privacy restrictions.
- Control apps – There are apps that can help parents control what their kids have access to online. Research what best works for your kids’ age groups. Check internetmatters.org for a guide to monitoring apps.
- Take away temptation – Have your kids do their homework and play time in the same room as you – at the table or in the living room where you can monitor their time.
- Unplug – Kids, as well as adults, need downtime and it’s important to unplug from electronics and do something different. Play outside with your child, toss a ball with the dog or pull out a board game for some fun.
Work together with your kids to find what works best and be clear and consistent with your rules.
