It’s a common dilemma most parents struggle with these days – how much screen time is too much? And how do you limit the time your kids spend on computers, online games and smart devices when it’s such a big part of everyday life?

These 5 tips from Rebecca Young – a California middle school “20 year veteran” teacher with Common Sense Media – explains how parents can help limit kids’ screen time:

  1. Know when your kids are online – Monitor and watch for signs your child is using a device when he or she shouldn’t be: like after bedtime, at school or early morning when they should be getting ready. Some parents lock phones away at bedtime and allow them back after breakfast the next day.

  1. Internet controls – Check your device’s screen time settings that include downtime, app limits, content and privacy restrictions.

  1. Control apps – There are apps that can help parents control what their kids have access to online. Research what best works for your kids’ age groups. Check internetmatters.org for a guide to monitoring apps.

  1. Take away temptation – Have your kids do their homework and play time in the same room as you – at the table or in the living room where you can monitor their time.

  1. Unplug – Kids, as well as adults, need downtime and it’s important to unplug from electronics and do something different. Play outside with your child, toss a ball with the dog or pull out a board game for some fun.

Work together with your kids to find what works best and be clear and consistent with your rules.
