What's necessary to protect against the latest surge of the COVID-19 virus? The "Swiss cheese model" of defense shows how we can slow the spread using layers of protection.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, you may have heard experts refer to the “Swiss cheese model” of pandemic defense.

In this metaphor, cheese slices represent multiple layers of protection that can be employed against COVID-19. Each layer of protection — vaccines, masks, social distancing, quarantine — has its imperfections. When we use multiple layers together, however, our chances of slowing the spread and defeating this virus are stronger.
