Staying active during pregnancy is important for both mom and baby. Though it is not the time to try and lose weight, safe exercise during pregnancy has many other benefits. Exercise not only provides relief for some of the common discomforts of pregnancy, but also prepares your body for labor and after delivery.

If you were active before becoming pregnant, it’s typically safe to remain active. However, it’s recommended you consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise.

According to the American Pregnancy Association, exercising for 30 minutes every day can provide health benefits like:
  • Reducing backaches, constipation, bloating and swelling
  • Preventing or treatment of gestational diabetes (diabetes in pregnancy)
  • Improving mood
  • Improving posture
  • Promoting muscle tone, strength and endurance
  • Improving sleep habits

Guidelines for Exercising During Pregnancy
Once approved by your healthcare provider, guidelines advise:
  • Wear comfortable clothes as well as a supportive bra
  • Drink plenty of water before, during and after working out
  • Eat enough calories to meet the needs of your pregnancy, as well as your exercise program
  • Finish eating at least one hour before exercising

Low Impact Exercises Safe to do While Pregnant
While it’s recommended to avoid high-impact exercise, there are many forms of low-impact exercise that are safe when pregnant. This includes walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, and spin class.  The most important thing is to be active and get your blood flowing.
