Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

Community Regional’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) treats children facing life-threatening illnesses or trauma. The team in our 10-bed PICU provides high-level care for critically ill or injured infants, children and adolescents up to age 21.

Our pediatric intensivists and critical care nurses are specially trained to manage children with many critical conditions. Your care team may include other clinicians like respiratory therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, or others depending on your child's care needs.

The PICU includes private patient suites with comfortable seating, sleeping space for parents, access to the internet and TV with interactive education and information for patients and family members.

We participate in the California Children’s Services (CCS) Program. It’s a state program for children with certain CCS-eligible chronic diseases or health problems. CCS provides resources for children under 21 years to have access to necessary diagnostic and treatment services, medical case management, nutrition management and physical and occupational therapy services.

Child Life Program

“When kids don’t have the words to express how they’re feeling … if you put a doll or toy in front of them, you can kind of assess how they’re coping through their play.”- Community child-life specialist

A child life specialist is a trained professional with expertise in helping children and their families overcome life’s most challenging events. And research shows the interaction a child life specialist brings a young patient can have a major impact on his or her well-being.

Community Regional’s Child Life Program in the Leon S. Peters Burn Center helps children and their families cope with the difficult experience of being burned. The child-life specialist works on social, emotional and developmental issues while the child is in the hospital, which is often done through teaching and playing.
