Founded in 1974, the Emergency Medicine residency is one of the oldest programs in the country. It features a strong emphasis on clinical teaching and hands-on training. Divisions include EMS, research, toxicology, global health, wilderness medicine and ultrasound.

Residents train in one of the busiest emergency departments in California at Community Regional Medical Center. The flagship of the Community Medical Centers healthcare network, Community Regional is home to the onlyLevel 1 trauma center and comprehensive burn center between Los Angeles and Sacramento.

Many of UCSF's graduates work in emergency departments throughout the country, ranging from small community hospitals to large tertiary academic medical centers with residency programs.
