Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the lap band procedure is less invasive and is reversible. However, for it to work patients need to have a strong commitment to make a lifestyle change.

During a lap band procedure, the doctor places the lap band around the upper part of the patient’s stomach and esophagus. A small tube runs from the band to a port which sits under the patient’s skin on the patient’s abdomen. The operation is done laparoscopically, so the recovery time is within a week or two. Most patients are back to their normal routine within a few days.

Through the port left under the skin, the doctor works with the patient to adjust the tightness of the band, thus limiting the amount of food the patient can consume.

To qualify for the lap band procedure a person must have body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater, about 100 pounds or more overweight. In addition to having tried and failing several weightloss attempts, the patient must also have a medical condition present such as diabetes or high blood pressure, pending that the patient’s BMI is between 35 and 40.
