About 300,000 hip replacement operations are performed in the U.S. each year. New technology and advances in surgical techniques have greatly reduced the risks involved with hip replacements.

To help patients who need hip replacement, Dr. Lester uses mini-incision hip replacement, a procedure he perfected.

Dr. Lester says a standard hip replacement requires a 12- to 15-inch incision. Dr. Lester’s hip replacement requires a 2- to 4-inch incision. The surgical time also is different. It takes only about half an hour to do a mini-incision and about two hours to do a hip replacement through a regular incision.

For patients who want to find out more about this mini-incision hip replacement procedure, Dr. Lester holds a social clinic that meets at his office once a month. At the clinic, patients can ask questions of other patients who have received a mini-incision hip replacement as well as talk about their concerns.
