Pharmacy Residency

The Community Medical Centers ASHP Accredited Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program is designed to be clinical in nature at a Level I Trauma and Regional Burn Center. Residents are trained, with progressive decreases in preceptorship, to provide care to a broad variety of patients; to serve as educators for pharmacy students and other health care professionals; and to conduct clinical research.

Rotations are provided in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, Critical Care Medicine, Critical Care Surgery and Burn, Critical Care Trauma, Neonatal Critical Care, Emergency Medicine and Ambulatory Care. The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program also provides residents the opportunity to hone written and verbal communications skills; develop professionalism; develop leadership skills for large and small group direction; and develop in-depth understanding of the interrelationships of clinical, operational, administrative, academic and organizational pharmacy.

What do the residents (current and alumni) think about Community Medical Centers Pharmacy Residency Program?

Dr. Kimthy Pham (2005-2006): "Looking back on my residency year, I was telling my past co-resident how fortunate I feel to have been part of the residency program at CMC.  I truly feel the preceptors have taught me so much about pushing myself and challenging myself to do better and more, and I'm so grateful to have had you all as my preceptors.  One of my managers had even commented me on my organizational skills, and I really think I have you to thank (I learn from the best!)."

Dr. Krista Preckel (2008-2009): "I selected this program because it’s a level I trauma center with a great teaching hospital reputation, and because it’s a smaller residency program.  It also had many perks such as paid staffing only every 3rd weekend, own office space, and great clinical pharmacists.  This program was my top choice after I ended up interviewing at 5 different hospitals both in CA and out of state.  3 things I love:  1. our office  2. preceptor support  3.  the physicians I have gotten to know & work with."

Dr. Sofia Jimenez (2008-2009): "Personally, I feel that the workload is pretty heavy, but that I have made it manageable with time management. I already feel that I am learning the skills necessary to be a competent clinical pharmacist and that when I complete this residency I will be able to work in whatever clinical position I am put into."

Dr. Leonard Valdez (2007-2008): "I appreciated the organization and the flow of the program. I believe this is “key” to a successful program. In addition, providing structured guidelines and deadlines made the continuity of professional development achievable. "

Dr. Michelle Chang (2005-2006): "I really felt that the rotations and preceptors is what makes this residency program strong and stand out from other residency programs."

Dr. Noelle de Leon (2009-2010):  "The most important thing to consider when selecting a residency program is whether the program provides you with the opportunity to learn in your field of interest. Personally, I was looking for a program that would prepare me to practice in an acute care setting. CRMC offers core rotations in various ICU settings, the Emergency Department, and Internal Medicine, along with Ambulatory Care. As a teaching hospital, you become part of rounding teams that are just as open to learn from you as you are open to learning from them. The success of this program truly relies on the dedicated pharmacists who are genuinely invested in your learning. The preceptors are clinical pharmacists who are highly supportive, very knowledgeable in their field, and practice the most current evidence-based therapies. CRMC not only teaches the clinical aspect of pharmacy, but the practical staffing side as well. The program prepares you as a pharmacist through weekend staffing in the inpatient pharmacy and order entry training. This program allows you to truly take ownership and accountability for your patients. Overall, I feel as though this program will provide me with the confidence to practice in various acute care settings. I couldn’t be happier. "

Dr. Terrie Liu (2009-2010):  "This residency program was my top choice because it had everything that I was looking for in a strong program – level 1 trauma center, teaching hospital, interdisciplinary rounds, variety of critical care rotations, organization and GREAT PRECEPTORS.

Dr. Linda Ly (2009-2010):  "This program had all the resources I was looking for in a residency: a great teaching hospital at a level I trauma center, pharmacist friendly health-care professionals, extraordinary clinical pharmacists, excellent support system, and private residency office. I was fortunate to have rotations here as a pharmacy student and knew that this residency program would provide me with the necessary skills to be a competent clinical pharmacist."
