Almost three years following Epic go-live, we have been tasked to optimize our EMR and unlock its full potential. While the initial go-live was very successful, opportunities were missed.
One such opportunity is the Problem List; this powerful tool has not been leveraged to its full potential. The education to integrate it into problem-oriented documentation was missed, but must be re-visited in preparation for ICD-10 documentation challenges that lay ahead.
This shift in documentation practice will be a culture change for our Medical Staff, but it is our belief that it will lay the necessary foundation for ICD-10 documentation practices that will drive physician and hospital reimbursement in the future.
To prepare for this, we will be reaching out to the Medical Staff to begin a comprehensive education campaign to start this necessary transition in documentation practice. I hope we will successfully navigate this necessary culture change to our mutual benefit.
