Community Medical Centers’ foundation, along with Tom Richards (chief executive officer of The Penstar Group), KMPH Fox 26 and others are joining together to fulfill a dream.
With a lead gift from Richards, and partnerships from others, Community’s board of trustees approved the proposed name for a burn and trauma survivor family home on the campus of Community Regional Medical Center.
The hotel-like facility will be named Terry’s House in honor of Terry Richards, Tom Richards’ brother who survived a serious trauma at age 5. Community Regional houses the only burn and Level 1 trauma centers between Los Angeles and Sacramento, with critical north and south Valley patients transported to downtown Fresno to get the care they need.
“Most every family has been touched by a serious injury to a relative or close friend,” Tom Richards said. “During these times of profound stress and concern, a place to stay close to our loved ones during their prolonged hospitalization is a relief. Terry’s House will be their safe harbor for generations to come.”
The proposed 17,000-square foot, two-story house will consist of 20 guest rooms to provide patients’ families with convenient and affordable lodging while their loved ones receive critical care.
Terry’s House will be used primarily for burn and trauma survivors’ immediate family members who reside outside of Fresno, but also will support specialty care such as high-risk maternal services, neonatal, cardiac and neurosurgery.
The facility will be located on the south side of the Community Regional campus, on the opposite side of Fresno Street across from the main entrance. Groundbreaking is scheduled for December of 2007, with an expected completion of February of 2009.
Community Medical Foundation is launching a campaign to raise $3 million to fund and equip the home and raise additional dollars to create the endowment for operations and charity.
Preliminary design of the facility allows for:
• 20 guest rooms with private baths and refrigerators
• Adjoining guest rooms that can be combined into one larger suite
• Dining area
• Laundry facility
• A large great room
• Activity, lounge and sitting areas for relaxation
• Family resource center
• Children’s activity room
