A woman with a deadly tumor in her brain must undergo neurosurgery while she's wide awake.
During surgery to remove two brain tumors from Patricia Reed, neurosurgeon Meg Verrees determined the second tumor would require a specialized surgery. Because of the second tumor’s location, Dr. Verrees needed the patient awake during part of the surgery as the tumor was beneath the area of the brain that controls speaking and walking. Patricia Reed helped the surgeon by talking during parts of the surgery so Dr. Verrees could make sure she did not operate in areas that would affect Patricia’s speech or ambulatory abilities. After a successful surgery by Dr. Verrees and her special team of clinicians, Patricia spent awhile recuperating in the hospital and went home to recover and rehabilitate.
