Community Medical Centers was one of 34 nationally to win a grant from Cardinal Health to improve patient safety at its three hospitals. Community was selected from more than 700 hospital, clinic and health system applicants for a $35,000 grant for Community’s new patient-focused infection prevention program.

The last thing on Summer Bourez’s mind when her 7-year-old son was critically injured in a car accident was where she was going to stay while he recovered. Like many others, she never expected her loved one would be involved in a traumatic accident.

“In a matter of seconds your whole world just changes,” Bourez said. “I was with my mom when we got a phone call that shattered our lives. My sister was killed in a car accident and Chase was with her.”

They arrive at all hours of the day and night – helicopters fly them, ambulances drive them. They come from a 15,000-square-mile area, and nearly half of them are children. They are burn patients.

And each year hundreds of them are taken to the Leon S. Peters Burn Center at Community Regional Medical Center for life-saving treatment by its specially-trained medical team.

In a seven-year pledge in 2000, physicians with University Centers of Excellence and Central California Faculty Medical Group Inc. (CCFMG) donated $1 million to Community Regional Medical Center for ambulatory care and the trauma and burn centers. 

In early 2008, they made the final payment.
