When Rob Villa was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center after his family’s house caught fire, he didn’t realize how badly he was burned.

“Oh, I didn’t think I was that bad at all. I thought maybe [I’d be released] the next day. Oh I didn’t think it was that bad,” Villa said.
His father Ray couldn’t believe Rob actually got out of the flames.

Surgery patients will be a lot closer to the hospital for pre-operative and post-operative care now that Community’s north and south clinics have moved over from Community Health Center-Cedar (the once-UMC campus) to the new Surgery Health Center at Community Regional Medical Center’s downtown campus. 

Located at 255 N. Howard, on the northeast side of the hospital, the modular building opened its doors on April 28.

Dr. Steven Hysell became one of the first neurosurgeons in the Central Valley to insert the PRESTIGE Cervical Disc, the first artificial neck disc commercially available in the United States.

The artificial disc, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2007, gives patients another option for overcoming intolerable neck or arm pain and regaining function. It also allows some patients battling degenerative disc disease the potential for motion.

Community Medical Centers was one of 34 nationally to win a grant from Cardinal Health to improve patient safety at its three hospitals. Community was selected from more than 700 hospital, clinic and health system applicants for a $35,000 grant for Community’s new patient-focused infection prevention program.
