Blue Cross of California has recognized the Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital’s bariatric program with its own “Surgical Center of Expertise” designation.

The designation now allows patients with Blue Cross insurance coverage to have bariatric and metabolic surgery at the same hospital that has been recognized by leading independent ratings organization HealthGrades as the “best in the region for overall cardiac services.”

Walking into his first grade classroom at Tulare Christian School is a milestone for 6-year old Chase Bourez, who some are calling a modern-day miracle.

Last spring, Chase was in a deadly car crash and rushed to the only burn and Level 1 trauma center in the Central Valley, housed then at the former University Medical Center and moved shortly afterward to Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno.

“When the accident first happened, they were flying him in to be an organ donor,” said Chase’s mother Summer Bourez.

Neurosurgeon Don Myers pushed buttons on a remote-control during spine surgery Oct. 9, and instantly views from three different angles popped up on a nearby flat screen showing him slipping two screws carefully between vertebrae.

Dr. Myers, medical director of neuroscience at Community Regional Medical Center, was the first to use Community Regional’s new neuroscience equipment, part of a $3 million investment to bring the most advanced neuroscience technology to Fresno.

It all started with an idea, two dedicated people and a chicken coop. 

The Charles McMurray Company was established in 1946 by traveling salesman Charles McMurray and his wife, Cassie. At the time, Charles was working for Washington Hardware, but he dreamed of having his own company. With his drive and entrepreneurial spirit, Charles started his business of selling household hardware goods out of his first warehouse – an old chicken coop.
