Headaches, nausea, dizziness. Symptoms like these don’t seem so out of the ordinary for a mother dealing with the daily pressures of caring for a child with special needs. Luz Marina Knight was experiencing all three and thought it was probably just the stress of caring for her son, Kyle, who had been diagnosed with autism in 2005 at age 4.

Hundreds of people reached out to newly elected Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims earlier this year when she announced she had breast cancer.

Diagnostic tests detected the disease, and for Mims, who’d just fought through and won a campaign to become the first female sheriff in Fresno County history, a new battle began. 

Mims, who underwent surgery Feb. 21 at Clovis Community Medical Center, explained how diligence and expert detection helped save her life.

Clovis Community Medical Center will soon have the region’s first 128-slice CT scanner, which provides twice the imaging power at half the radiation. Community Medical Centers’ board approved the purchase at its July meeting.

The new CT, or computerized tomography, scanner is scheduled to be installed in November.

At Clovis Community Medical Center’s fertility center, a dedicated team of physicians and nurses focus on providing personalized care for those experiencing difficulty in conceiving.

The center has helped couples start families since 1985. It is the only fully accredited Level 3 fertility program in the Valley and draws patients from all over the globe.

When Rob Villa was rushed to Community Regional Medical Center after his family’s house caught fire, he didn’t realize how badly he was burned.

“Oh, I didn’t think I was that bad at all. I thought maybe [I’d be released] the next day. Oh I didn’t think it was that bad,” Villa said.
       
His father Ray couldn’t believe Rob actually got out of the flames.
