Oops! My dear husband, even though both of us are looking forward to this trip to see our son in South Carolina that we have not seen in months, was not too pleased when he heard that I booked the trip over Superbowl see, our son is a professional pipe organist, is not too keen about sports or watching them, and so we may have to slip into a local sports bar (do they have those in South Carolina?) to see the game! Oh...that will be just great-you know they allow smoking in bars in other states, and on top of that, we don't even drink....oh well.

All the important feel-good words were there at the Fresno Board of Supes, which unanimously endorsed a resolution to bring a UC med school to the San Joaquin Valley.

Partnership.... Pipelines.... Collaboration.... Unity....

All the sound reasoning was also present at the Jan. 29 vote.

Now it all makes sense, why very little is accomplished in Congress or state legislatures. Consider these:

  • Why can't Congress and the President seemingly ever agree and smoothly push through an important bill? Hill watchers proclaim: They lack a working relationship. What happened to the old 5/10? Smile and make eye contact at 10 feet and exchange a pleasantry at five feet? (And remember, a mere several decades ago, bachelor lawmakers would regularly dine at households of married lawmakers of the other party -- food, chat, collaboration anyone?)

Bob Newhart has written a New York Times Bestseller called " 'I Shouldn't Even Be Doing This' and Other Things That Strike Me as Funny". In it he recalls a time when he was a salesperson at a tobacco products store. A customer came in and made a very sizeable order. Bob did not recognize him and asked for his name and pertinent information. Well, it turned out to be a guy named Anthony "Big Tuna" Accardo, the reputed head of the Chicago mob, which was known as "the outfit".

Instead of a countdown to the start of baseball spring training, I should have launched a countdown to the day Bob Sillen would get fired from his nearly two year job of overseeing the health care overhaul of the California prison system.
