Fresh off an Alaska Air flight from Seattle, that New York Times headline was my welcome back to Fresno.

I've got no big digs against Alaska Air -- friendly service, first bag free. OK, they served raisins -- from TEXAS -- as the snack. They asked passengers to clean out the seat pouch in front of them -- doesn't the CDC breed stuff  there?

Forget the 8-ball, health care is behind the glacier in terms of top issues the public is sweating as elections near. One opinion poll lists it floe-ing behind the economy, the war and the price of gas.

Democratic pollster Anna Greenberg told the Washington Post: "For a lot of people who have health insurance, they are paying more for health care, but it may not show up as concretely as paying $70 to fill their gas tank."

Yeah, imagine if Chevron hoisted a sign, "Monthly premium for couple, $225," and the Citgo 'cross the way had, "Family of four, $200, high deduct"?

It's the latest in the "blame, don't blame" game of health-care, finger-pointing -- with at least one worthwhile takeaway. The Public Policy Institute of California has a new report, "Emergency Department Care in California; Who Uses It and Why?"

Folks were asking me this morning what I did over the weekend...well, I purged! I got in one of those moods where I wanted to clean the place up, and watch out, when I put my mind to it, if you're sitting in the wrong place, I may load you up for Goodwill...

The California budget that wasn't born on July 1, or Aug. 1, may also be overdue -- absent serious hard labor -- come Sept. 1. (BTW, a quick check shows that, since 1992, the latest date a state budget was enacted was Sept. 5, 2002.)

Consider the possible scenarios playing out:

  • Democrats leaning heavily on tax hikes to offset a $15 billion deficit (what kind, who pays -- at issue). Republicans bent on a spending cap (how much, whose ox will be gored in the foreseeable future -- at issue).
