SERVE DEI @ Terry's House

Last Sunday, March 17th, Terry’s House excitedly welcomed approximately 30 volunteers into our home-away-from-home as part of an annual city-wide volunteer movement inspired and organized by The Well Community Church. This day-long invitation and challenge to serve our community is better known as, “Serve Dei”.

These enthusiastic volunteers joined forces to accomplish four very special “projects” to benefit Terry’s House and current house guests over the course of the day.

Hog for Hospitality--Week 2

On Friday, April 6, 2012 Terry’s House supporters attended their first of many functions to showcase the motorcycle that is being raffled off to benefit Terry’s House, a hospital hospitality home that cares for the families of our critically ill or injured patients at Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno.  The first event was held at the Hot Rod Coalition car show in northwest Fresno.  It went very smooth with over 20 tickets sold in the first weekend.

Since we broke ground on Terry’s House in early 2010, our very own Community employees have embraced this place as their own. They not only contributed to the building of the project, but still today continue to help buy supplies and regularly volunteer to cook a meal for our guests. A few have even held fundraisers among the social and civic groups they belong to!

As you can imagine, we learn A LOT about families when they stay with us for any given amount of time. Some choose to share more, others less. It has been neat to watch over the past several months as each of our staff here makes special connections with particular families. For whatever reason (maybe it’s as simple as schedule), we tend to meet those in need of our personal compassion at just the right time, for all the right reasons. I call it divine placement; others may deem it something else.

7 months in Terry's House – a bittersweet goodbye

Today is bittersweet.

Our very first house guest, Yvonne Frear, her mother-in-law Rosie and I just carried the last of their seven months worth of suitcases out to the yellow cab. They are on their way to the airport, with Philip in tow and headed home to Texas!!! It is amazing how much we’ve gotten to know Yvonne, her family, their friends and their story in what felt to me like the shortest seven months of my life… but what was probably the longest seven months of theirs.
