For 28 years, the Nursing Leadership Coalition of the Central San Joaquin Valley (NLC) has recognized great nurses for their achievements through the RN of the Year Awards. This year, two of Community’s nurses were among those awarded these honors. David Boyd, DNP, RN-BC was named RN of the year in the Administration/Leadership Category and Marilyn Greene, MSN, RN,NP, CEN received the RN of the Year in Advanced Practice.
As our Chief Nursing Informatics Officer, David is our system leader for clinical informatics – ensuring that our nurses and other professionals gain the skills to work with our electronic health record (EHR) and that we adapt our workflows to improve the safety and quality of our care using this tool which has transformed our practice.
He guided the development and launch of a decision support tool for nurse early identification of patient distress – Modified Early Warning Scores (MEWS). Using this tool, our pilot units had zero code blues during the pilot period and we have rolled it out across the organization.
Marilyn is Advance Practice Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED) at Clovis Community Medical Center. She is filled with passion and enthusiasm in her work in the ED. She created a mock code curriculum to help staff improve their knowledge, confidence and critical thinking in an emergency situation.
Her team rolled out a new process which has improved patient satisfaction – a Patient Passport. The passport follows the patient through their ED process and patients are reporting better satisfaction with their ED experience as a result of knowing what is happening to them.
In addition, Carla Milton, Community’s Director for Organization Development and Education, was recognized with the Friend of Nursing Award. Carla works closely with our nursing leadership team as we develop and implement important initiatives. These include new competency based job descriptions for our nursing career ladder and nursing leadership positions; training for nursing and other clinical professionals for our Epic Go-Live including an assessment of staff's computer skills and providing basic computer skills classes for those who required them; and implementing a professional practice model to shift our task focused RN workforce to role based practice. We were proud to nominate her and thrilled that she was selected NLC’s Friend of Nursing this year.
