Consortium tackles kids' athletic concussions

Employee News & Views Editor: August 27, 20132 Comments

Each year, children of all ages in our Valley schools experience a concussion from playing sports.  Some are diagnosed and some aren’t. Their coach, parent or teacher might not recognize the signs and as healthcare professionals, we sometimes find out days or weeks later.

Now I’m excited to announce we have a new way to diagnose and treat these children! Valley healthcare professionals can actively help these young athletes when they come to us in our office, clinic or emergency room.  Dozens of our region’s practitioners and educators have formed the Central Valley Concussion Consortium to work toward improving concussion education and awareness.

On behalf of this consortium and its sponsors (Community Regional Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Central California, Centre for Neuro Skills and Safe Kids Central Valley) I am delighted to invite you to the University of California San Francisco Fresno campus for the Central Valley Concussion Symposium on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, from 8 a.m. to noon.

This conference brings together a multidisciplinary group of practitioners and educators who are actively involved in the rehabilitative care and medical management of concussion patients in the region. We are not only working to improve awareness but to also improve outcomes for the future of our concussion patients.

Speakers will review the pathophysiology, medical management, imaging changes and long term implications of cumulative concussions through a variety of topics. Please review the information enclosed. I hope to personally welcome you at the event and would be extremely grateful for your R.S.V.P by Sept. 6 by calling 559.977.1132.  Continental breakfast will be served.  I look forward to seeing you there.
