This week I had the honor of going on a home care visit with Rebecca Williams, RN and Rachel Bermio-Eroh, RN.   Rachel was providing care to Mary,* a 62-year-old grandmother, taking care of her 8-year-old grand-daughter, despite the fact that Mary has multiple sclerosis.  Rebecca and I brought along a little Christmas cheer in the form of a few toys and other gifts.

I was sitting in the stands last Friday night, at the Giants vs. Dodgers game when Buster Posey came up to bat in the 9thinning with the game tied 1-1.   It was a full count.   “What’s his name again?” I asked Ron, a recent transplant to California. “That’s Buster Posey”, he said. “Watch”.

Last week I had an invitation from a colleague to go for coffee to discuss a couple of work topics.  Her text message said, “I found this new place and I really love it.  Let’s meet there”.

In the fall of 1994, I was working for an HMO, when I got a call from a former boss. After a few minutes of pleasant chitchat about kids and local events, the conversation sort of stalled. It was in that pause that Michelle* lowered her voice to just above a whisper, (which was strange because she was calling from her car), and said, "I just wanted to check in to see if you are happy in your job.  I'd like you to meet somebody.”

Do you like country music?   I do.  I’m sure at some point on my drives down  Hwy 168  you could spot me doing an embarrassing imitation of Taylor Swift, singing “I knew you were trouble when you walked in,” or singing along to Sugarland’s “Stuck Like Glue,” or Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now.”    I had never really listened to Carrie Underwood and have tickets to attend the March 5 concert at the Save Mart Center, so I decided to sample her music last Saturday.   I br

Like other Community employees, this morning I was greeted by an email from our system CEO Tim Joslin, saying thanks for putting our heart and soul into the work we do in caring for each other and our patients. This message triggered endorphins in me.  I felt a burst of compassion, gratitude and pride. How many CEOs send a love note to their workforce?! So I thought- "Wow, I have to pay this forward!"
