They're working on a special Highway 99 offramp to the UC Merced campus, but in the meantime you trek across some seedy and some spanking new parts of the city to get to the land where the mascot is a Golden Bobcat.

Bam. There it is. Like a space station on Mars. Dozens of buildings -- labs researching things like stem cells, "student quarters" named after Valley counties, gyms that don't smell like sweat, a digital library with a Starbucks ambiance. It sits on a fraction of the land dedicated to the campus'  future and to planned communities around it.

In the 2/5/08 edition of the Wallstreet Journal (frontpage I might add), there was an article titled "Empathy Lessons in School"...it caught my eye, so I kept reading......a Canadian nonprofit group called "Roots of Empathy", is now bringing to some U.S. school classrooms a program designed to reduce bullying by exposing students to "empathy babies" for a whole academic year.

Well, at the Holderman Household anyway......one evening last week, two of my colleagues and I were out for a business dinner, and one of the appetizers on the menu looked quite appealing, so I ordered it-two whole cloves of baked garlic, roma tomatoes and a touch of olive oil. A few hours later, I arrived at home, excited to greet my husband after a long day and instead of "honey, how was your day?", the first thing out of his mouth was "WHAT did you have for dinner?"......."Well, what do you think I had, and 'hello to you too!' ".

A lean, carefully seasoned dollop of beef cooked with a masseuse's touch, a Vidalia onion thinly sliced, organic ketchup evenly spread and a lightly toasted whole-wheat bun.

Doc, I know there's some bad stuff in a good burger, but occasional indulgence isn't full immersion in low-density lipoproteins (LDL -- the "lethal" cholesterol).

A good burger (even a bad burger at a good baseball game) is a few stanzas short of "Ode to Joy."

Oops! My dear husband, even though both of us are looking forward to this trip to see our son in South Carolina that we have not seen in months, was not too pleased when he heard that I booked the trip over Superbowl Weekend....you see, our son is a professional pipe organist, is not too keen about sports or watching them, and so we may have to slip into a local sports bar (do they have those in South Carolina?) to see the game! Oh...that will be just great-you know they allow smoking in bars in other states, and on top of that, we don't even drink....oh well.
