Whoa!...apparently a gentleman in Brazil reportedly had police finally catch up with him as he owes the equivalent of nearly two million dollars in unpaid traffic fines. The police stopped the 36 year old man and discovered he had been ticketed nearly 1,000 times, the year he bought his current car. He accumulated fines for speeding and running red lights.

Lots of good-deed doers earned honors under a blinding early evening sun outside Arte Americas on Oct. 2.

Judges who helped troubled kids through the juvenile justice system and lawyers and their clients -- some of Fresno's homeless -- who won a landmark settlement vs. Fresno City were among those receiving Champions of Justice awards at an annual Central California Legal Services event.

For me, one honoree encouraged the 175 or so in the audience with a simple synopsis of his life and philosophy.

What I always want: Something thoughtful, different, forward-thinking -- and flat-out doable -- in addressing health-care needs.

What I get: Politicians playing dodge ball and gotcha games as nursing homes, emergency rooms, child-care centers and minimum-wage jobs are engulfed with people in need.

What I found refreshing recently: The October 2008 issue of Wired magazine.

I should've picked up Ray Steele's hints a couple of weeks ago. "I thought you'd been retired by now," he said to me as a group of Clovis citizens met with him to discuss the demise of the Clovis Independent newspaper.

"How come you're not retired?" I parried, in style characteristic of my 30 years in the news biz. Steele shrugged his shoulders.

So, when his retirement as Fresno Bee publisher was announced Sept. 29 after 40+ years with the McClatchy newspaper chain, I was relieved and saddened.

There are some things that persist to consume me and anxieties I hang on to...when it comes down to it, do they really matter?

Sometimes I get so upset when my hair doesn't cooperate, that there's a runner in my hose, that the dogs chewed up an item I left out erroneously, that there is an accident that slows me down for work, that the bread I had popped in the toaster came out burnt, that when I was rushing to get to my car, the fuel tank was nearly empty and I was already running late, and when the football team you're cheering for loses...
