Yippee. The ludicrous price of gas means more shipping businesses may relocate to the Valley 'cause it's a great halfway point to lots of somewhere else's.

I got to thinking outside "the Valley as a call-center megalopolis" box while touring the new Holiday Inn downtown and viewing the unveiling of a snazzy web site redesign by the Fresno Economic Development Corporation. The site reminded me how much we need to elevate our aspirations.

If I made everyone mad at me at least once, I figured I was doing a good job as a newspaper reporter. Since reporters write their stories using less than 10% of notes they've taken, there's room for skewed judgment, error -- and outraged readers, justified or not.

Things are out of control! Now they are going to charge us for checked you know what this means? I and millions of others are just going to try to cram more in our carry-ons and stuff them in spaces that are already insufficient! You just wait! They're going to start weighing people in addition to their baggage and charging us for anything over XX? Airlines are desperately trying to balance costs with revenue and they will stop at nothing!

My dentist of 20 years calls me "his dinosaur." I'm one of only a couple of his patients who gets teeth drilled and filled, crowns implanted -- dang near everything -- without an anesthetic.

Anesthetic was never offered to me as a kid. And my Catholic upbringing suggested, "Suffer in silence, offering your pain for the souls in Purgatory."
