"Senior citizens in California's Central Valley region have the worst health in the state and may provide a snapshot of the challenges California faces over the next two decades -- a time in which the elderly population is projected to double.

"Diabetes, obesity, falls, as well as low mammography rates and sedentary lifestyles among older adults are all more acute in the San Joaquin Valley ..."

My answer -- a story without quotes -- would be "colorless."  American media are consolidating shops, slashing staff and shipping off advertising, billing and even news-gathering services to places like India (streaming audio means your city council can be "reported" by keyboardists in Calcutta).

This past weekend, my husband and I attended the Fresno State Bulldogs game. They were favored to win by 18 over New Mexico...they did win 24 to 17, but it wasn't pretty, and the 17 points of New Mexico were in essence "given to them" by the Dogs.  It's in the "win" column though. I know there are numerous opinions about their coaching, performance and ratings this last season but there's still a glimmer of hope for a BCS game-they must conquer San Jose and Boise, not an easy task.

The Santa Ana winds buffeted the United Express puddle jumper as we rocked our way from Palm Springs Airport to LAX, the horizon a flaming crimson from fires near Santa Barbara.

Aboard, a gravely voiced woman who'd announced in the terminal she'd recently had a heart attack and might need help with her luggage. Aboard also, passengers bound for Germany, a Mom and her daughter whose luggage sported a blinking-light tag and, among others, me, returning from a hospital association meeting.
