Community Regional Medical Center has the only round-the-clock, fully staffed burn center between Los Angeles and Sacramento. The Leon S. Peters Burn Center covers the largest service area in California, treating patients within 15,000 square miles – an area almost as big as Rhode Island, Connecticut and New Jersey combined.
Patients are treated by a medical team specially trained to care for adults and children with burn injuries. In 2005 alone, the burn center performed more than 9,300 burn therapy procedures and nearly half of those treated were children.
Burn injuries are one of the leading causes of hospitalization and death for children in the Central Valley. Most children treated at the Peters Burn Center were scalded by hot liquids related to cooking. Safe Kids Central Valley, a national children's safety program, has created new committees to help prevent burns and fall-related injuries in Fresno and Madera counties.
