Finances - Fiscal Year Ending August 31, 2009
Community Medical Centers is a local, not-for-profit, public benefit organization that has been serving the health needs of California’s San Joaquin Valley for more than 100 years.
As the most comprehensive and technologically advanced hospital system in the region, Community operates three acute-care hospitals – Community Regional Medical Center, Clovis Community Medical Center and Fresno Heart & Surgical Hospital – along with long-term care, outpatient and other health care facilities. Community also is the largest private employer in the area with more than 6,000 employees.
Our work helps the local economy in many ways. For example:
Our annual operating costs are more than $1 billion, including payroll and benefits to employees totaling more than $511 million. |
We pay Fresno and Clovis vendors about $122 million annually for supplies and services. |
Longstanding challenges confront Community and other not-for-profits. For example, health care reimbursements, particularly from federal, state and county health programs, continue to be problematic. The Valley’s demographics and geography also create significant obstacles in the treatment of medical conditions, delivery of services and preventive medicine.
Community historically spends approximately 15% of its operating expenses - historically about $149 million a year - in charitable and unreimbursed services for care provided to the poor and underserved, the elderly and disabled and for education. These community benefits are nearly double the amount provided by all other Fresno-Madera hospitals combined.
