Women and Weight Training

Attention all women. Don’t worry. If you lift weights, you won’t look like Arnold. Lifting weights does not mean you will “bulk up." Building bulky muscles takes very heavy weights,  a lot of hard work and specific types of training. Resistance (weight) training can be beneficial for everyone, including women. Especially post-menopausal women.

Here are some reasons why weight training is especially important for women:

  • Strengthens muscles and tendons. These help support your joints and allow you to move with greater ease.
  • Helps improve bone density -- a major problem for post-menopausal women. A recent study asked a group of post-menopausal women to lift weights. They lifted as much weight as they could for 3 sets of 8 repetitions. The results supported the belief that resistance training increased bone density.
  • Muscle is a metabolic tissue.Your muscles burn calories no matter what they are doing. If you build a little bit of additional muscle, you will not only become more toned and shapely. Your body also will burn more calories on a regular basis, thanks to the increased muscle helping you to stay trim.

No matter what your age, proper weight training can be beneficial.
