Exercise and Diet Modification Go Hand-in-Hand

Many people try to "just diet" or "just exercise." Unfortunately, your body won’t respond with the changes you want to see with just one of these. Because you exercise doesn’t mean you can eat what you want. Because you diet doesn’t mean you don't need to exercise.

Modifying your diet is extremely important for several reasons:

  • Decreasing fats in your diet -- especially saturated fats -- greatly decreases your chance of heart disease, not to mention all those unwanted pounds. Remember: you eat fat, you wear fat.
  • Limiting your simple carbohydrates (sugars) helps you keep off unwanted weight, avoid the development of diabetes and keep your cholesterol down.
  • Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables decreases your risk of cancer and heart disease.
  • Taking in adequate amounts of calcium helps prevent the onset of osteoporosis.
  • Eating "quality" calories means better nutrition for you. Avoid all those foods (sodas, sweets, most fast food) that have little or no nutritional value -- useless calories that do nothing but add unwanted inches and pounds .

Adding exercise to the mix is important for the following reasons:

  • Aerobic exercise (walking, hiking, bike riding, running, rowing) helps improve the health of your cardiovascular system and decrease your risk for heart disease.
  • Resistance training (weight lifting) helps prevent osteoporosis and falling, not to mention makes you stronger and allows you to do more later in life.
  • Stretching allows you to move the way you want and helps prevent injuries to the lower back and shoulders.

Without the combination of exercise and diet modification, a person's weight will fluctuate up and down over the years, gradually climbing higher and higher -- slowly increasing the amount of body fat they have while slowly losing their lean tissue (muscle).
