Community Regional Medical Center

Community Regional Medical Center is truly a regional academic medical center with the only burn and Level I Trauma center between Los Angeles and Sacramento, a 56,000-square-foot emergency department that’s the largest in the state, leading edge technology and USCF Fresno Medical school faculty and residents practicing cutting-edge research here.

Formerly known as Community Medical Center-Fresno, the hospital was founded as a sanitarium in 1897 by Celia Burnett and a group of Fresno physicians. The regional medical center was the first Central Valley hospital to offer a revolutionary, minimally invasive heart surgery as well as breakthrough technology in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Community’s flagship hospital offers world-class specialized critical care with:

• the area’s only stroke unit with 24-hour vascular neurology and neurosurgery coverage and a team of specially trained stroke nurses

• 200 USCF Fresno residents receiving advanced medidal training

• the world’s first G4 CyberKnife®

• the Table Mountain Rancheria
Level 1 Trauma Center

the Leon S. Peters Burn Center

• the region’s only perinatology program for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries

• the da Vinci® robotic surgical system

• the region’s only 5-star Health Grades rating for hip and partial hip replacement surgery

• leading diagnostic and interventional heart procedures

• two 64-slice CT scanners

• the Valley’s only cancer treatment program with teaching hospital-level accreditation

• three helicopter landing pads

In the past decade when other hospitals were faltering, Community Regional was expanding. More than 70 California hospitals have closed and others filed for bankruptcy because of escalating costs and increasing numbers of uninsured patients. In the face of similar challenges and in a region often known for its poverty, Community Regional instead built a 10-story Trauma and Critical Care building and created something unique on a 58-acre campus in the heart of downtown Fresno. It now has 457 licensed beds and serves an average of 332 inpatients a day.
