Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy
Developed in the 1940s to treat deep sea divers who suffered from decompression sickness, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is used today to treat health conditions including burns, carbon monoxide poisoning, trauma injuries, infections, amputations and complications from cancer and diabetes.
HBO treatment takes place inside a tubular chamber that is sealed to create an environment where the entire body is under increased pressure and patients breathe 100% oxygen. The high concentration of oxygen combined with increased atmospheric pressure causes large amounts of oxygen to be dissolved into the blood – promoting tissue growth and helping persistent wounds to heal. The Leon S. Peters Burn Center at Community Regional houses two hyperbaric chambers.
